Selling a Junk Car With No Keys

By H&H Cash for Junk Cars Chicago · Last updated

Can you sell a junk car if you've lost the keys?

Yes. A missing key doesn't stop a junk car sale, because the buyer is paying for the car, not for driving it. H&H Cash for Junk Cars Chicago buys keyless cars around Riverdale and the far South Side; what matters is the title or other ownership papers, plus knowing whether the car can roll so the free tow is planned right.

Or call(708) 901-0454from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m., any day

Why the key matters less than you’d think

People often assume a car without a key can’t be sold. For a used car you plan to drive, a key is part of the deal. For a junk car it isn’t, because nobody is going to drive it away. The tow truck takes it.

So when you call, we’ll ask about two other things instead:

  1. Can you prove the car is yours? That’s the title, or papers Illinois accepts in its place.
  2. Will the car roll? That decides how it gets onto the truck.

Proof of ownership: the real question

Illinois requires scrap processors to record a document of ownership for every vehicle they take, such as a certificate of title, a salvage certificate or a junking certificate, and they record two forms of ID from a private seller, one of them a driver’s license or state ID (625 ILCS 5/5-401.3).

A key, by contrast, isn’t a document of ownership. If you have the title, losing the key is a small detail. If you’ve lost both, start with our page on junk car removal without a title and tell us what papers you do have; Illinois rules decide which ones work for a scrap sale, and we confirm on the call.

Will it roll without the key?

This is the part that changes pickup day.

Car Without the key What it means for the tow
Older car, mechanical key Steering may be locked and the shifter may stay in Park Treated as a car that won’t roll
Newer car, key fob or push-button Usually can’t be shifted out of Park with no power and no fob Treated as a car that won’t roll
Manual transmission Can often be left in neutral if it was parked that way May roll, check before the visit
Car already in neutral Wheels turn, steering may still be locked Easier to line up, steering still matters

A car that won’t roll isn’t a problem; it just needs the right hookup. Our explainer on flatbed versus wheel-lift towing shows why, and moving a car that won’t roll covers the shift-lock release and the steering lock in detail.

Where keyless cars tend to sit

A car whose key went missing has usually been parked a while. In Chicago’s Altgeld Gardens and Riverdale area, that often means a spot in a shared lot. In Merrionette Park, a tiny village where a junked car can’t sit anywhere the public can see it, a keyless car parked in view is a notice waiting to happen. Either way, tell us exactly where it is and which end faces the open space.

Before pickup day

  • Find the title, or list the papers you have.
  • Check whether the doors are locked; if they are and you can’t open them, say so.
  • Take the plates off if you can reach them. In Illinois they stay with you.
  • Clear anything of yours out of the trunk, if it opens.

Next step

Fill in the form with the year, make and model, and pick the title answer that fits. Or call us and say “no keys” at the start; it’s a normal call for us, and the tow is free either way.

Short answers

Should I get a new key made before selling a junk car?

Usually not. A replacement key for a newer car can be expensive, and for a junk car it rarely changes how the car is towed or bought. Spend that money only if you want to drive the car yourself.

Does a missing key lower the offer?

It can matter for a car that would otherwise be resold or driven, but junk cars are mostly bought for what they are, not for being drivable. Mention it on the call and the quote will account for it.

The car has a push-button start and the fob is gone. Can it still be towed?

Yes. A car with no fob usually can't be put into neutral the normal way, so it's handled as a car that won't roll. Tell us when you call.
